Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma is one of the leading public health concerns around the globe, and its multifactorial ethology includes complex interaction between heritage, nutritional and lifestyle habits. Still, this is the only carcinoma showing strikingly high correlation with nutrition. The aim of this research was to estimate risk factors for colorectal carcinoma in student population, which are related to characteristics of their diet and lifestyle habits. The results are showing that a number of risk factors are abundant among the observed population of students. Those are high prevalence of overweight (23.1%) and obesity (6.1%), high prevalence of smoking (30.0%), low level of physical activity (25.6% inactive, 30.3% seasonally), high consumption of alcohol (20.6% weekly, 1.4% daily), and positive family anamnesis (47.5% with predisposition, 12.1% with positive anamnesis i.e. colorectal carcinoma case). The most important risk factors related to nutritional habits in the observed student population are high consumption of meat and meat products, high consumption of salt and other seasonings, and low intake of fish, fruits and vegetables. The highest risk of colorectal carcinoma related to nutritional and lifestyle habits were found among students with positive anamnesis (colorectal carcinoma in closest relatives). Present study has found significant abundance of risk factors for colorectal carcinoma among students.
