Abstract
Prirodne vode, podzemne i površinske, često sadržavaju povišene koncentracije prirodnih organskih tvari (NOM). Prirodne organske tvari dospijevaju u vode ispiranjem tla ili biološkom razgradnjom biljnih i životinjskih materijala u vodi. Najznačajnija komponenta prirodnih organskih tvari su humusne tvari. Humusne tvari su nepoželjne u vodi jer vodi daju boju, okus i miris te na sebe vežu različite kontaminante (teške metale, pesticide). Naročito značajan problem predstavljaju povedane koncentracije humusnih tvari u vodi pri dezinfekciji vode klorom pri čemu nastaju štetni halogenirani nusprodukti trihalogenmetani (THM) koji djeluju toksično i kancerogeno na ljudski organizam. Humusne tvari su kompleksna smjesa spojeva koji se razlikuju po strukturi, molekularnoj težini, boji i poziciji funkcionalnih skupina, ovisno o porijeklu i starosti organskog materijala, vrsti vode, ekološkim i klimatskim uvjeta što rezultira i različitom reaktivnošdu s klorom, odnosno različitim njihovim potencijalom za nastanak trihalogenmetana, a što se izražava takozvanim potencijalom nastanka trihalogenmetana (THMFP).Membranski procesi uključuju odvajanje otopljenih, koloidnih i suspendiranih sastojaka iz vode primjenom selektivnih membrana na temelju njihove međusobne razlike u veličini, obliku i kemijskoj strukturi. U ovom radu ispitan je utjecaj pojedinih vrsta membrana na učinak uklanjanja organskih tvari iz vode, odnosno, na smanjenje potencijala nastanka kancerogenih trihalogenmetana.

Natural waters, groundwater and surface, often contain elevated concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM) due to geological composition or biological decomposition of plant and animal material in the water. The most significant component of natural organic matter are the humic substances. Humic substances are undesirable in water because they cause appearance of color, taste and smell. Because of their molecule structure (long carbon chains and/or rings), humic substances often bind a variety of contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides). Significant problem is the heightened concentrations of humic substances since they, during the water disinfection with chlorine, form toxic and carcinogenic by-products trihalogenmethanes (THM). Humic substances are complex mixtures of organic compounds with different structure, molecular weight, number and position of functional groups depending on the origin and age of the organic material, the type of water, environmental and climatic conditions which results in a different reactivity with chlorine so called trihalogenmethane formation potential (THMFP).Membrane processes are efficient methods for ions, colloids and solids removal from water based on their molecular weight and chemical structure. This paper investigated the NOM removal efficiency of different membrane types and their ability to reduce the trihalogenmethane formation potential.
