As a result of climate changes, drought has become a worldwide problem limiting wheat production. Young seedlings are especially susceptible to drought. To create resistance and defence against oxidative stress caused by drought, plants have developed several adaptive and defensive mechanisms. Abscisic acid has an important role to fight against stress. Knowing how a particular genotype responds to drought is crucial for full development and optimum yield. The purpose of this study was to examine the percentage of germination, shoots, and roots over six days in controlled conditions. To create osmotic stress we used polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) as osmoticum. It is a non-ionic water-soluble polymer that cannot easily penetrate into the plant so it is often used in drought studies. In this study, three PEG levels (15%, 20%, and 30%) were used. Seeds were started to germinate after the second day of the experiment. The highest PEG concentration (30%) had the strongest inhibitory effect on germination compared to 15% and 20% PEG concentrations during all six days. Root length exhibited reduction at 20 and 30% PEG treatments compared to control. The highest PEG concentration (30%) had the most damaging effect on germination, shoot, and root lengths. Root length did not change significantly between plants that grew to 15 and 20% PEG and 20 and 30% PEG, respectively, indicating that the root more successfully tolerated drought than shoots.
