Abstract
Propolis je pčelinji proizvod, smolasta je masa, koju pčele skupljaju s drveća, te ju ugrađuju u košnicu. U posljednje vrijeme čovjek ima sve manje povjerenja prema proizvodima dobivenim sintezama, pa se sve više okreće prirodnim tvarima nalazeći u njima pouzdanost i sigurnost. Upotreba propolisa kao smole ljekovitih svojstava poznata je još od pradavnih vremena. Sve vrste pčela ne sakupljaju propolis jednako. Pčele koje intenzivnije proizvode propolis svojim metabolizmom su kavkaska i madagaskarska , neke slabije kao što je talijanska i ukrajinska pčela dok ga neke uopće ne proizvode kao što je indijska pčela. Apis mellifera carnica takozvana siva pčela ubraja se u skupinu pčela sa srednje izraženim svojstvom za skupljanje propolisa. Neosporne kvalitete pčelinjih proizvoda ukazuju na široku mogućnost njihove primjene u liječenju, ishrani te u kozmetici. Propolis sadrži oko 200 različitih tvari, 22 minerala i 7 vitamina, dok se kemijski sastav razlikuje ovisno o vegetaciji gdje ga pčele skupljaju. Sadrži: biljne smole i balzame, pčelinji vosak, eterična ulja, pelud, mehaničke nečistoće. Propolis ima antibakterijsko, antivirusno, antimikrobno i antiinflamatorno djelovanje, poboljšava imunološki sustav ,a smatra se da pomaže i u borbi protiv tumora. Za razliku od kemijskih antibiotika koji uništavaju sve bakterije u tijelu, lošu ali i pozitivnu crijevnu floru, propolis kao prirodni antibiotik djeluje protiv štetnih bakterija bez uništavanja pozitivnih bakterija koje su tijelu potrebne (pod dobrim bakterijama smatramo naprimjer bifidobakterije, laktobacili koji svojom prisutnošću u debelom crijevu sprječavaju rast ili uništavaju patogene bakterije). Smatra se da propolis pozitivno djeluje na sluznicu, kožu i mnoge druge organe kao što su: mozak, oči, dišni sustav, probavni sustav, bubrezi, jetra i reproduktivni organi. Nuspojave su vrlo rijetke, a one koje se javljaju budu uglavnom kod osoba sklonim alergijama na ubod pčele.

Propolis is a bee made product, a resinous mass which bees collect from trees and then implement it into their hive. Lately, people have less confidence in products resulting from syntheses, and are increasingly turning to natural substances, which seem reliable and safe. The use of propolis as a resin with curative properties is known from ancient times. All bee breeds don't collect propolis the same way. Bees which produce more propolis by their methabolism are the Caucasian and the Madagascar bee, the Italian and the Ukrainian bee produce a bit less, while some, like the Indian bee, don't produce it at all. Apis mellifera carnica, the so called gray bee, is included in the group of medium property for propolis collection. Indisputable qualities of bee made products point to the wide possibilities for their use in healing, nutrition and cosmetics. Propolis contains around 200 different substances, 22 minerals, and 7 vitamins, while its chemical structure differs based on the vegetation where the bees are collecting. It contains: herbal resins and balms, bee wax, etheric oils, pollen, mechanical impurities. Propolis has antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antiinflammatory effect, it improves the immune system, and it is also considered that it helps in fight against tumors. Unlike the chemical antibotics which destroy all bacteria in the body, that is bad but also good intestinal flora, propolis as a natural antibiotic has effect on the harmful bacteria without destroying the good bacteria needed in the body (among these good bacteria are for instance bifidobacteria, lactobacillus that when found in the large intestine prevent the growth or destroy the pathogenic bacteria). It is considered that propolis has positive effect on the mucous membrane, skin, and many other organs such as: brain, eyes, respiratory system, digestive system, kidneys, liver, and reproductive organs. Side effects are very rare, and those that do occur are for the most part in people prone to bee sting allergies.
