Abstract
Enzimi su biološki polimeri koji kataliziraju biokemijske reakcije, odnosno pretvaraju jednu ili više tvari (supstrat) u jednu ili više drugih različitih tvari (produkt) koji nastaju tom biokemijskom reakcijom. Enzimi ubrzavaju određenu biokemijsku reakciju, te je čine bržom od obične reakcije za najmanje 106 puta. Osim nekih nukleinskih kiselina, enzimi su, strukturalno gledajući, proteini. Kao i svi proteini, građeni su od aminokiselina koje su međusobno povezane peptidnim vezama. Zbog velikog broja različitih enzima, kojima su tijekom otkrića dodjeljena nesistematska imena, provedena je međunarodna klasifikacija enzima, kako bi se enzimi razvrstali u skupine po sličnosti reakcija. Tako su enzimi svrstani u šest osnovnih skupina: oksidoreduktaze, transferaze, hidrolaze, liaze, izomeraze i ligaze. Svaka od ovih skupina dalje je podijeljena na svoje podskupine, a zbog svoje rasprostranjenosti enzima i na podpodskupine.

Enzymes are biological polimers that catalyze biochemical reactions, i.e. convert one or more substances (substrate) in one or more other different substance (product). Enzymes accelerate certain biochemical reaction at least 106 times. Apart from some nucleic acid, all enzymes are proteins. Like all proteins, they are built of amino acids that are connected by peptide bonds. Due to high number of enzymes which were named nonsistematicly the international classification of enzymes was performed to clasify enzymes in groups according to similarities of performed chemical reaction. Thus, enzymes are classified into six main groups: oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyase, isomerase and ligase. Each of these groups further is divided into its subgroups, and because of prevalence of enzymes, into subsubgroups.
