Abstract
Zadatak ovog rada je bio utvrditi koncentracije i raspoloživost selenija (Se) u tlu i razine u kukuruzu iz Slavonskog Kobaša u kojem se javlja bolest endemska nefropatija. Analiza je vršena na 17 uzoraka tla i kukuruza s različitih lokacija unutar istog sela te je ispitano eventualno postojanje varijacija u apsorpciji Se iz tla od strane biljaka. Određene su i dodatne značajke tla: udjel organske tvari, ukupni sadržaj Ca, Fe, C, N te pH-vrijednosti uzoraka. Utvrđeno je da su vrijednosti Se u tlu i kukuruzu zadovoljavajuće, pri čemu su najniže vrijednosti Se u kukuruzu unutar raspona koji se povezuje s adekvatnim dnevnim unosom. Nema korelacije izmedu Se u tlu i kukuruzu, ali ni s ostalim praćenim značajkama tla. Osim mogućeg utjecaja drukčijeg sastava tla, rezultati su možda posljedica i nedovoljne statističke jakosti zbog malog uzorka. Istraživanje nije utvrdilo deficitarne koncentracije Se u kukuruzu niti velike razlike između lokacija te je minimalna vjerojatnost da varijacije opskrbljenosti ovim elementom u istom selu utječu na rizik obolijevanja od endemske nefropatije.

Parallel abstract (English)
The aim of this work was to determine concentrations and availability of selenium (Se) from soil and levels in corn from the village of Slavonski Kobaš in which endemic nephropathy occurs. Analyses included 17 soil and corn samples taken at different locations around the village area and possible variations in plant Se absorption from the soil were investigated. Additional soil parameters were determined: content of organic matter, total Ca, Fe, C, N and pH-value. Results indicate a satisfactory Se levels in both soil and corn, whereas the lowest values where within the range associated with adequate daily dietary intake. No correlation between Se levels in soil and corn was detected, nor with any of the other monitored factors. In addition to a plausible effect of different soil composition, the results could have also been affected by the low statistical power. This study did not establish deficient Se levels in corn nor large differences between locations and it is therefore highly unlikely that variations in provision with this element modulate risk of endemic nephropathy in any significant way.
