Abstract
Kao posljedica razgradnje organskih spojeva tijekom konvencionalnih aerobnih postupaka obrade otpadnih voda nastaju značajne količine aktivnog mulja. Obrada i odlaganje viška aktivnog mulja predstavlja veliki ekološki i financijski problem. Obradom otpadnih voda pomoću gljiva dobiva se pročišćena voda i biomasa gljiva koja, za razliku od primarno bakterijske biomase aktivnog mulja, ima veliku proteinsku vrijednost te ju je značajno lakše izdvojiti od pročišćene vode i dehidrirati nakon izdvajanja. Osim biomase, tijekom procesa obrade, ovisno o uvjetima vođenja procesa, mogu nastati i drugi korisni metaboliti gljiva koji se mogu naknadno izdvojiti. Gljive sintetiziraju velik broj unutarstaničnih i izvanstaničnih enzima koji im omogućuju razgradnju strukturno različitih i teško biorazgradljivih spojeva koji su prisutni u otpadnim vodama kao onečišćenje. Obrada otpadnih voda pomoću gljiva koja uključuje istovremeno dobivanje korisnih produkata zanimljiva je alternativa konvencionalnim postupcima obrade. Ipak, nedovoljno poznavanje ponašanja (kinetike rasta) gljiva u umjetno konstruiranim ekosustavima, poput uređaja za obradu otpadnih voda, čini ovu tehnologiju još uvijek teško primjenjivom u velikom mjerilu.
Abstract (english)
Conventional biological wastewater treatment generates large amounts of activated (sewage) sludge as a result of organic compounds biodegradation. The treatment and the disposal of this excess sludge is a major environmental and financial problem. Fungal wastewater treatment results in improved and purified water and fungal biomass that potentially has a much higher protein value compared to mostly bacterial biomass of activated sludge. Furthermore, the separation and dewatering of fungal biomass is much easier. Apart from the biomass, valuable fungal metabolites (by-products) may be synthesized during the wastewater treatment process, depending on the process conditions, and isolated afterwards. Fungi synthesize a large number of intracellular and extracellular enzymes that enable biodegradation of structurally diverse, recalcitrant pollutant compounds present in wastewater. Fungal wastewater treatment for concomitant pollutant degradation and by-product recovery is an interesting alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods. However, more research is needed to establish a better understanding of fungal systems (e.g. growth kinetics) in constructed ecosystems (such as the wastewater treatment plants) which makes full-scale-up of this technology difficult.
