Sažetak (engleski) | Fad dieting aiming for weight loss can be a trigger in developing eating disorders, and gym attendees are one of the high risk group. The aim of this research was to examine the prevalence of fad dieting among gym attendees, but also to analyse their general diet and lifestyle and supplement use. This was an observational online study. The responses from 189 participants were analysed (29.6 % male and 70.4 % female), age 18 to 58. 24.3% of gym attendees were currently on a fad diet, more men than women (28.6 % vs 22.6 %). The majority of participants currently on a fad diet (39.1%) had practiced one for aesthetic reasons for more than 10 times. Out of 30 women on a fad diet, 63.3% had normal Body Mass Index (BMI) but only 43.3% of them considered themselves as normal weighted. Instagram is the most frequently used social platform (39.7 %). On the other hand, out of 16 men who were on a fad diet, two (12.5%) had normal BMI while seven of them (43.8%) considered themselves as normal weighted. Gym attendees who were on a fad diet tended to smoke more and consume alcohol more frequently in comparison to those not on a diet. Younger gym attendees had more dietary restrictions (more EHQ points), and restrictions are connected with the use of supplements (p=0.032). Participants who regularly used dietary supplements had significantly more dietary restrictions (higher number of EHQ points) compared to participants who did not use dietary supplements. These results show a number of habits which are contradictory to increased physical activity. Social media have important role and it is necessary to educate children and adults of potential dangers behind fad diets. |
