Abstract
Prvi korak u prevenciji i liječenju cerebrovaskularnih bolesti (i krvožilnih bolesti općenito) uključuje promjenu prehrane.

Parallel abstract (English)
Cerebrovascular diseases belong to the group of cardiovascular diseases. Today, they are the second cause of death in the world for the people older than 60 years and they are the fifth cause of death among people aged 15-59 years. In Croatia, 60% of the total number of deaths by cerebrovascular diseases is caused by stroke. The most important risk factors mentioned family history, age, nutritional status, level of daily physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption, and eating habits. The incidence of cerebrovascular disease increases with age, so the primary focus is placed exactly on the prevention effect on the risk factors. The first step in the prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular disease (and all cardiovascular diseases) involves changing the diet. All preventive measures and actions go in direction of inadequate level of physical activity and unfavorable dietary habits. High intake of fats (especially saturated and trans fats), high intake of salt and high intake of simple carbohydrates should be replaced with Mediterranean diet based on fish, olive oil, whole grains, vegetables and fruits, moderate consummation of red wine and physical activity for stimulating circulation and health of blood vessels. By applying the regime of proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, a stroke can be avoided even if the person is prone to developing the disease.
