Abstract
Probiotici su žive stanice mikroorganizama koje se zbog svog djelotvornog učinka na ljudsko zdravlje intenzivno proučavaju i komercijalno primjenjuju u različitim proizvodima diljem svijeta. Pozitivan učinak na zdravlje ljudi i životinja dokazan je velikim brojem znanstvenih istraživanja. U najvažnije probiotike ubrajaju se bakterije rodova Lactobacillus i Bifidobacterium, ali probiotička svojstva pokazuju i baketrije Pediococcus, Lactococcus i Bacillus, kao i neki kvasci. Najčešći pozitivni zdravstveni učinci koji se pripisuju probioticima su jačanje imuniteta, obnavljanje crijevne mikroflore, ublažavanje probavnih smetnji, protuupalni i antialergijski učinak, itd. U ovom radu dan je povijesni pregled razvoja probiotik, pregled osnovnih probiotičkih mikroorganizama i njihova načina djelovanja, kao i pregled zdravstvenih učinaka probiotika.

Probiotics are live microorganisams that are extensively studied and commercially explored due to their beneficial effect on human health. Numerous studies have proven this beneficial effect both on human and animals. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are considered the most important probiotic genera. However, some other bacteria (e.g. Pediococcus, Lactococcus, Bacillus) and some yeasts also show probiotic characteristics. The most common attributed positive health effect include immunity strenghtening, intestinal microflora restoring, indigestion relief, anti-inflammatory and antiallergic activity, etc. In this work, the history of probiotics development, overview of basic probiotic microorganisms and their modes of action and probiotics health effects, are presented.
