Abstract
Svrha ovog ispitivanja bila je odrediti koncentraciju arsena u noktima populacije izložene visokim razinama arsena putem vode za piće (10 puta višim od dozvoljenih). Ispitivanje je uključivalo 39 osoba s područja Andrijaševaca i Rokovaca, koje su izložene ovom elementu duži vremenski period. Kontrolna skupina se sastojala od 15 osoba koje su izložene niskim razinama arsena. Uzorci su razoreni na mikrovalnom uređaju te analizirani atomskim apsorpcijskim spektrofotometrom. Utvrđene su srednje koncentracije arsena u noktima izložene skupine 10,55 ± 4,34 ppm, a kod neizložene skupine 0,35 ± 0,27 ppm. Nije ustanovljena razlika između spolova u koncentraciji arsena u noktima. Utvrđeno je da starije osobe pokazuju tendenciju slabije pohrane arsena u noktima nego mlađa populacija. Indeks tjelesne mase i razina selenija u urinu također pokazuju negativnu korelaciju s razinom arsena u noktima, što bi moglo biti vezano uz prehrambeni status izložene populacije i opskrbu tvarima koje moduliraju metabolizam arsena u organizmu.

The aim of this work was to determine toenail arsenic concentration in a population highly exposed (ten times higher than maximum allowed level) to arsenic from drinking water. Thirty-nine chronically exposed subjects from Andrijaševci and Rokovci took part in the study. Control group consisted of 15 individuals exposed to low levels of arsenic from potable water. The samples were digested in a microwave-heated system and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometer. Determined mean arsenic levels in toenails in the exposed and control groups were 10.55 ± 4.34 ppm and 0.35 ± 0.27 ppm, respectively. Correlation analysis pointed to a tendency of impaired storage of arsenic in toenails in older individuals, as opposed to younger subjects. Body mass index and urinary selenium were also inversely correlated with toenail arsenic levels, possibly indicating the importance of nutritional status in exposed subjects and provision of nutrients which modulate arsenic metabolism in the body.
